Wide view of the Empire Theatre Canopy
Theatre Canopy

"I was commissioned to make this canopy for the Empire Theatre in Middlesbrough as a replacement for the original 1899 canopy which had long been removed. Only an indistinct picture of the original existed. Art nouveau 'thick and thin' impressions were produced by bending the 40 x 8mm bars on edge before bending around jigs to make the panels. Time spent on designing and making jigs was almost as much as manufacturing time."

All the panels were designed by Peat Oberon, the glass panels were made by a local stained glass expert.
